My Guys

Of all the tasks that I have attempted in my life the training of teachers has been the best and most rewarding. They have taught me far more than I have taught them; to watch and learn how they have learnt has given me an insight into learning and teaching second to none. To be able to fight direct, one has to lose one's own identity and assume the persona of the student or actor: What are his fears, his strengths, his needs?  It takes a special kind of person to achieve this. Too often I see the fight director's “moves” superimposed on the actor, so that they are not coming from the performer. The effect is that we become aware of the fight having nothing to do with the production.  It becomes, as it were, a cabaret act in the middle of the play.

The only arrangement I have with my assistants is that they will not use my name to teach until we BOTH agree that they are ready.

On the whole it takes about six years to become what I think is a really good Fight Director. The first two are training as a student, the second two working with me as a teacher and lastly accompanying me around to various gigs. This is not a full time job and often my assistants are off doing acting jobs in between. All of them are working in the theatre.
